About the Item

This highly atmospheric, original and unusual painting, by James Exley, was executed in 1941. The focus of the headlights, dancing off intricately detailed branches and trunks, is most probably due to the restrictions placed on the headlamps of vehicles driving at night - with a view to the German bombing campaigns (the painting was executed a year after The Battle of Britain) on the British Isles. Exley was commissioned to produce miniature paintings of Queen Mary, and his work can be found in the V&A Museum, the collection of the British Museum, National Trust and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
